The Immunohistochemical Effects of Acupuncture on the Experimental-induced Diabetes Mellitus in Rats

Abstract
n order to observe the effects of acupuncture into She¡¯nshu¡§(BL23), He¡¯gu¢§(LI4), Ta¡¯icho¡©ng(LR3), and Yo¢§ngqua¡¯n(KI1) loci respectively on diabetes mellitus was induced.
Then, the levels of glucose, insulin, glucagon and triglyceride in serum and the levels of blood urea nitrogen were measured respectively.
Also, the insulin and glucagon immunoreactive cells in the pancreatic islet were measured. All the levels and cells were measured for 20, 40 and 60 minutes¡¯ acupuncture duration on the 1st, 4th and 7th days.
The results were as follows
1. The serum glucose level were significantly decreased for 20 minutes¡¯ acupuncture duration on the 1st, 4th and 7th days in the groups of BL23, LI4, and LR3 acupuncture.
2. The serum insulin level were significantly increased in most of groups of KI1, acupuncture.
3. The serum glucose level were significantly decreased for 20 and 40 minutes¡¯ acupuncture duration on the 1st day, for 20 minutes¡¯ acupuncture duration on the 4th day and for 40 and 60 minutes¡¯ duration on the 7th day in groups of BL23, LI4 and LR3 acupuncture and they were significantly decreased for 40 minutes¡¯ duration on the 1st day in KI1 group
4. The serum triglyceride level were significantly decreased for 20 and 60 minutes¡¯ duration on the 4th day, and 60 minutes¡¯ duration on the 7th day in groups of BL23, LI4 and LR3 acupuncture and they were significantly decreased for 20 and 60 minutes¡¯ duration on the 4th day, and 20 and 40 minutes¡¯ duration on the 7the day in KI1, group.
5. The blood urea nitrogen levels were significantly increased for 60 minutes¡¯ duration on the 4th day in groups of BL23, LI4 and LR3 acupuncture and they were significantly increased for 20 and 60 minutes¡¯ duration on the 7th day in KI1 group
6. th insulin immunoreactive cells in the pancreatic islet were significantly increased for 40 and 60 minutes¡¯ duration on the 7th day in groups of BL23, LI4 and LR3 acupuncture and they were significantly increased for 20 minutes¡¯ duration on the 7th day in KI1 group.
7. The glucagon immunoreactive cells in the pancreatic islet normally recovered for 40 minutes¡¯ in the groups of BL23, LI4, and LR3 acupuncture.
According to the above-mentioned results, it is presumed that terms duration of acupunture has treatment effect on the streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus.
